Dr. Federico Maldonado Magos, current Deputy Director of Radiotherapy at the National Institute of Cancerology, has dedicated his career to improving the care of cancer patients in Mexico. He has held leadership roles such as the presidency of the Mexican Society of Radiotherapists and the Mexican Board of Certification in Radiation Oncology.
During the 42nd Annual Medical Meeting of the National Institute of Cancerology (INCan), Dr. Maldonado expressed his commitment to oncological care in the country. He highlighted the increase in patients with oncological diseases and the importance of a human approach by specialists in radiation oncology.
At INCan, 350 patients are treated daily with brachytherapy applications, having a multidisciplinary team of highly trained specialists. Dr. Maldonado emphasized the importance of collaboration among health professionals in this institution to discuss advancements in oncology.
The specialist mentioned the implementation of techniques such as interstitial brachytherapy for tumor treatment, as well as the use of superficial therapy for benign conditions. The incorporation of a superficial therapy team is expected, which will free up space in linear accelerators to accommodate patients with deeper tumors.
Dr. Maldonado also mentioned the future installation of a four-dimensional simulator computed tomography to implement an extracranial radiosurgery program and improve precision in treatments. His long-term vision includes the creation of the first school of brachytherapy in the country, which would be a significant advancement in the training of specialists in radiation oncology.
